John E. Knight papers, 1815-1857.

Correspondence, deeds, certificates, plats, field notes, contracts, lease, receipt, power of attorney, and other papers relating to land grants, claims, titles, and to the surveying, sales, purchase, and leasing of land in and around Little Rock, Ark. Over half of the material pertains to the initial settlement of the townsite of Little Rock and to the controversy (1819-1822) over title to the townsite growing out of the preemption claims of William Russell and the "New Madrid certificate" claims of Stephen Austin, James Bryan, William M. O'Hara, Chester Ashley, et al. Most of the sixteen items dated from 1845 are from Knight's private papers. Other persons represented include Solon Borland, Wright Daniels, Eloy Dejarbois, Henry Elliott, Francis Lesieur, Joseph Thornhill, Isaac Watkins, and Amos Wheeler.
